Abstract

This review was conducted in order to analyze and discuss the available information concerning the seasonal breeding behavior of hair sheep in northeast of Mexico. It was analyzed the neuroendocrine basis that modulate the annual reproductive cycle in sheep and then it was discussed the degree of reproductive seasonality in Creole wool sheep, in breeds originated from high latitudes and hair sheep, mainly in Pelibuey and Blackbelly ewes. The Creole wool sheep show continuous annual reproductive activity and short seasonal anestrous. The females from northern origin express seasonal reproductive activity, similar to that observed in individuals geographically located at latitudes above 35°. Pelibuey and Blackbelly sheep show variable annual reproductive behavior with reduced anestrus or lack thereof which sometimes relates to food availability. It is suggested that the neuroendocrine mechanisms regulating seasonal anestrus in ewes, are active in the sheep from northern origin in Mexico; contrary to this, it is not activated in Creole and hair sheep.
