Abstract

Two field experiment were established, one with red bean and one with black bean, at IDIAP's El Ejido Experimental Field, Los Santos province. The fied is located 7º 54'13” (North Latitude) and 80º 22'30” (West Longitude), with an approximate altitude of 30 masl. A Completely Randomized Block Design with three replicates was applied to both experiments. Experimental plots consisted of four and three rows for the red and black bean trials, respectively. A total of 17 and 20 red and black bean cultivars were tested for yield, amount of harvested plants and the incidence of main diseases affecting this crop. Promising black cultivars, for their high yield and tolerance to prevalent diseases during the trials, were: CUT 107, ICTAJU 97-1, DOR 678 and TOMEGUIN. Outstanding red bean cultivars were DCE 9351-8, DOR 507, DICTA and SRC 1-18-1(A). These red and black bean cultivars are to be considered for future Regional research.
